What is a train reservation chart?
The reservation chart records the passenger and berth allocation for a train after chart preparation. Indian Railways has provided public online viewing of train charts and vacant berths, including vacancies from intermediate locations. A “vacant berth” therefore needs a station context: free from where, and until where?
When should you check empty seats?
Check after the relevant chart for your boarding/charting location is available. Long-distance trains can have remote charting locations, so the origin chart being ready does not always mean the chart relevant to a Day-2 or intermediate boarding station is ready. Charts are often ready hours before the official target, so YaatriGan does not make you wait for the clock.

Chart vacancy vs current availability
They answer different questions. Current availability tells you whether you can buy a ticket for a station pair and class now. Chart vacancy tells you which berth is physically unoccupied in the prepared chart and for which section. A short section can be empty even when no full-journey ticket is available.

Can you use an empty berth you find?
Do not treat a vacancy screen as permission to occupy a reserved berth. If a fresh ticket is offered, book through the applicable official channel. If you are already onboard with valid authority and need a berth allotment, speak to the TTE. The railway's live booking and onboard allotment remain authoritative.

What is train chart vacancy?
Train chart vacancy is the berth or seat accommodation shown as unoccupied after the relevant reservation chart is prepared. A berth can be vacant for the whole journey or only between particular stations.
How can I check empty seats after the train chart is prepared?
Choose the train, run date, boarding station, destination and class. Once the relevant chart is available, YaatriGan shows station-by-station vacancy and, when available, the exact coach and berth number.
Can I check vacant seats in a running train?
Yes, when chart data is available for the relevant boarding or charting location. Vacancy can change as the train moves and railway staff make onboard allotments.
Does a vacant berth in the chart mean I can book it?
Not always. Chart vacancy shows physical vacancy in the prepared chart; current availability shows whether a fresh ticket is being offered for your exact station pair and class. Between the first and the final chart an empty berth can usually still be booked as a confirmed ticket; after the final chart only the ticket examiner allots it.
Can a berth be empty only between two stations?
Yes. The same berth can be occupied on one part of the route, vacant on another and occupied again later. That is why YaatriGan shows vacancy against the actual station segments.
What if the chart is not prepared yet?
YaatriGan asks the chart itself rather than trusting the clock, because charts are often ready hours before the official target. If nothing is prepared yet, you see the usual time and can check again any moment.
What is the difference between the first chart and the final chart?
The first chart is prepared hours before departure; the final chart about 30 minutes before. Between the two, an empty berth can still be booked as a confirmed ticket. After the final chart, only the ticket examiner on board can allot it, RAC passengers first. YaatriGan shows which chart you are looking at and when the final one is due.
Empty-berth information can change when bookings, chart updates or railway staff allotments change. Always verify your ticket and final seat allotment through the applicable official railway channel before occupying a reserved berth.
